Episode 82: MSG (2013)

Listen to Episode 82

Happy New Year everyone! Type II is back after an en fuego fall tour with our review of the 2013 New Year’s run.  Not surprisingly, we were pretty excited to talk about these four shows, which we considered some of the best four days of Phish in a long time. The ‘we’ I am referring to is myself, Dave Calarco, and Brian Bavosa. I’m sure most of you know the format of the show by now, but for any Type II noobs out there, we walk you through each of the four shows, weaving in clips of our favorite jams with a sprinkle of insight and anecdotes along the way.

Thanks for listening.

Episode 81: Reading > Atlantic City (2013)

Listen to Episode 81

This week on the podcast, panelist Chris Glushko is taking on duties as host.  He is joined by past guest, Steve Paolini and new guest of the program, Tim Wade (aka The Emu). The panel takes us on the wonderful journey that is Reading through Atlantic City.  With many a clip to choose from, Mr. Glushko went conservative and queued up two per show to highlight the panel’s favorite moments. He also queued up a one way ticket to “Rank City.”  So sit back, grab a beer, and enjoy our final review of fall tour.

See you guys at MSG.

Episode 80: Glen Falls > Hartford (2013)

Listen to Episode 80

http://typeiicast.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/episode80.mp3

This week on the program, Adam Scheinberg (past guest and prominent .netter) has been kind enough to host. He is joined by past guest of the program, Parker Harrington, and new guest, Will Rubenstein. The panel has the pleasurable task of reviewing Glens Falls, both Worcester shows, and Hartford. Unfortunately, we don’t enough time to play all the clips we want, but we found the ten best which should not surprise you. So just press play and get to the good stuff already.

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

Episode 79: Hampton > Rochester (2013)

Listen to Episode 79

As you may have noticed, there’s been a little hiatus since Dick’s, which can be blamed on my non-podcasting life things (i.e. school).  Fortunately, Katie from TWoL was able to pitch in with coordinating the panels and I was able to shift hosting duties temporarily. Kicking this run off, panelist Josh Korin took control as host and was joined by new guest of the show, Troy Laur, and …. myself! We cover the first four shows of tour: Hampton through Rochester. Of course, all basic Type II procedures have been followed: banter, anecdotes, and professional insight mixed with a healthy dose audio clips. For those with short attention spans, here is your spoiler: Woo!

We are covering the final eight shows of tour in two more episodes, which should also be available when you are reading this.  We hope you guys enjoy, thanks for listening.

Episode 78: Dicks (2013)

Link to Episode 78

Summer tour has come to a close and there is never a better way to go out than with some Dick’s. Phish loves Dick’s. Of course I’m referring to the Labor Day weekend tradition of playing three shows in Denver at Dick’s Sporting Goods Arena. As the trend goes, the band uses Friday night to communicate a message to the fans by spelling something with their set list and then throws down the hose the next two nights.

Needless to say, I was excited to make my first pilgrimage there last week. Almost as excited as I am about the panel this week. To review this final run, I am joined by past panelist Tanya Sperry, past guest Pauly McGuire (aka TaoPauly from Coventry Music Blog), and first time guest Scott Marks (aka Biz Archive from Phish.net). And with this lineup, Type II Cast does what only it can do: provide a mixed perspective to review the music and supplement it with a premium selection of tasty audio clips.

I hope you have enjoyed following along with Type II Cast throughout the summer. My thanks and appreciation go out to all of the guests and listeners of the show, and to all of those people who brought good reviews. Unfortunately, it is unclear what, if any, shows we will produce in this short off season, but we will definitely see everyone at Hampton.

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

Episode 76: Tahoe (2013)

Listen to Episode76

This week on the program I am joined by three guests, .netter Brian Feller, and “Rory” and Ben (aka Guy Forget) from Online Phish Tour. On this episode we tackle just two shows, our easiest “load” of the summer. It is nearly impossible to give a proper introduction to the epic Tweezer jam from night two which is easily the highlight of (insert some length of time that you choose). But don’t let the Tweezer overshadow the rest of this stop on tour. In fact, we found quite a few other great clips to showcase.

Stay tuned for our final show of the summer (before Dick’s) when I host Chris Glushko and some TBD guests in wrapping up summer tour with our review of the Bill Graham and Hollywood Bowl shows.

Thanks for listening,

- Steve

Episode 73: PNC > MPP (2013)

Listen to Episode 73

This week on the podcast, Type II Cast continues with its review of summer tour 2013. For this round, we have four shows: PNC, Jones Beach, and both Merriweather Post Pavilions. Joining me on this episode are panelist Drew Hitz and past guest of the show Chris Bertolet.  The three of us guide you on a journey that is “stronger than the storm,” while providing insight and anecdotes to put this run into context. Of course, we have some tasty clips to supplement the commentary as only Type II can do. And spoiler alert, we have been loving tour so far! So sit back, relax, and block off the next hour and a half to take this trip to face melt city.

Thanks for listening and we will see you after Chicago!

Episode 72: Bangor & SPAC (2013)

Listen to Episode 72

Hey everyone! Type II Cast is back and in full swing with Summer Tour 2013. To kick off the new season, we have veteran guests of the show Charles Dirksen and Dave Calarco. The three of us review Bangor through SPAC 3 and, as should be no surprise, we were pleasantly content with the first four shows of tour. The new sound, new lights, and new stage set-up really have made a difference and infused some phresh air into the band’s 30th year. OF COURSE, we brought you the best clips to highlight our commentary, as only Type II Cast can do. So sit back, relax, and grab a smoke as we take you back on tour with us through the first four shows of 2013.

Thanks for listening,

- Steve

Episode 70: Phish’s Abstract Moment

Listen to Episode 70

This week, the podcast pushes the boundaries of recorded Phish analysis as we are joined by Zac Cohen and Andy Greenberg, resident essayists at Please Me Have No Regrets. On this episode, I’m talking with Zac and Andy about a piece they’ve been hard at work on over the past few weeks; “Phish’s Abstract Moment.” It is their contention that just after covering The Beatles “White Album” on Halloween in 1994, Phish embarked on a nearly-year long journey in which their dominant mode of jamming was an “Abstract” one, characterized by a willingness to explore the outer reaches of their own catalog. Zac and Andy discuss some of the influences leading up to this important moment in Phish’s career when they produced some of the most dramatic and emotionally evocative improvisations of their entire career. They also examine the significance of this type of jamming and the legacy it has left on the band’s current material. Though much of the music is difficult, disjointed, and strange sounding, it speaks to the nether regions of your musical souls and Type II Cast claims no liability if tonight’s clips MELT YOUR FACE.

Type II Cast will be back in June with the next Game Show Extravaganza, details to drop “soon.”

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

Episode 69: The Great Went

Listen to Episode 69: The Great Went

This week on the program we continue our effort to review all past Phish festivals, which, if you are playing along at home, means that we have landed at The Great Went. Phish’s first of three fests from Limestone, Maine, this was the band’s biggest concert to date and it definitely did not disappoint. Scotty B is in the driver’s seat for tonight and we are joined by Dave Calarco, Brian Bavosa, and Chris Bertolet. The cast covers everything from the tour leading up to The Went, the impact of this event on festivals to come, what the scene was like, and even the weather. It should be no surprise that we have pulled the best clips to represent this amazing event (spoiler: one is The Gin).

Have a memory from The Went you want to share? Leave a comment below. We will be back in two weeks, details to be determined. Thanks for listening,

- Steve

Episode 68: Desert Island Tweezer

This week on the podcast, we step into the freezer to discuss one of the biggest jam vehicles in the Phish cannon: Tweezer. Leading the discussion is panelist Drew, who has been know to fancy the tune. The episode is built around a “desert island scenario.” Joining him are veteran guests of Type II, Dave Calarco and Charlie Dirksen. Drew asked each panelist for the ten versions of Tweezer that they would bring to said island to make their stay more enjoyable. The panel then discussed the ten most commonly chosen versions among them. Of course, we have supplemented the in depth analysis and fun show anecdotes with ample clips. By the end of the episode, there will be laughs, there will be tears, and I guarantee you will have learned something. What Tweezers would you take to a desert island? Let us know in the comments below. We will be back in two weeks to talk about the Great Went.

Thanks for listening,

Steve

Episode 65: Nerdgasm, Part 1

Listen to Episode 65

The Ultimate Phish ‘Nerdgasm’ Part 1: The Selection Show

If you’re reading this, you probably consider yourself somewhat of a Phish nerd—someone who gains an unhealthy amount of pleasure in discussing best songs, shows, sets, venues, cities, lyrics, compositions, recordings, jams, lights, and more. With that said, we decided to hold the ultimate Phish nerdgasm, a 64-team March Madness style tournament to determine the best Phish jam of all time. Now, this is nothing new to the Phish blogosphere. We’ve all seen Phish March Madness brackets before, and I’m sure we’ll see them again. But we wanted to make ours just a little different. We did so by taking ourselves way too seriously. And I knew that if there was one person to take on this project with, it was fellow Phish.netter, Mockingbird Foundation volunteer, and list-maker extraordinaire, Steve Paolini.

Episode 63: 2013 Wish List

Listen to Episode 63

For this week’s show I wanted to talk about 2013, the 30th anniversary of Phish. Many of us are expecting a huge touring calendar with holiday runs and festivals as far as the eye can see.  And while anyone’s guess is as good as the next as to what will actually take place, I thought it would be fun to kill some time day dreaming about what we would like to see. Joining me on this ride are past guest / HT contributor Parker Harrington and first time Type II’er Adam Icculus. We touch on just about every aspect of what could be in 2013, including venues, types of jams, bust-outs, covers, and even the webcasts. As usual, we weave in some choice clips throughout the episode that will leave you salivating for more.

What would you like to see in 2013? Leave us a comment below or on our Facebook page.

Episode 58: Summer 2012 – An Unexpected Twist

Listen to Episode 58

After three months and eleven episodes, summer tour has come and gone. The leaves are changing and we are left with only our anticipation towards NYE and hopefully some great memories. Keeping with tradition, we needed to do some kind of recap before moving on. This time we have Eric Wyman and Chris Bertolet, who share a mere five clips in order to paint the picture of summer 2012 from their point of view. I, on the other hand, happily stayed quiet at the controls as I definitely needed a break by this point. Clips are presented “mystery jam” style, so play along at home. Bonus points if you can guess the outro clip.

Thanks for listening,

Steve

Episode 57: Dicks (2012)

Listen to Eisode 57

We Love Dick’s!

We had a lot of fun planning and recording this hour and fifty minute celebration of this summer’s tour closing three night run, which went down over Labor Day weekend at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. In the spirit of adding a new twist each episode, we welcome first time guest host Allie Carson. Allie is a seasoned vet and wife of regular panelist Chris. In addition to welcoming Allie, we also twisted things by having each panelist choose the clips from just one of the three nights. To showcase the outstanding jamming from the run, we each picked about 17 minutes of music to share. Allie selected our clips for night 2, Steve for night 3, and I selected for night 1. Cheers, and thanks for listening. Your comments are always appreciated.

Episode 53: SPAC (2012)

Listen to Episode 53

We find ourselves at the last stop on Summer 2012′s Leg 1. We had 3 nights nestled ever so gently into a state park at Saratoga Springs. We had a few bustouts, the type 2 jams, and creative setlists. Overall, we definitely had 3 great nights of music. So it should be no surprise that I was excited to review this run with fellow panelist Chris Glushko and guest Josh Korin. We technically chose 13 clips in all, which may just be the most ever, though we doubt anyone will mind. If you do, please leave a comment on the blog. In fact, send us all your hate mailz, we dare you.

Thanks for listening. We will see you on leg 2.

Episode 51: Deer Creek > Alpine Valley (2012)

Listen to Episode 51

This week on the program I am joined by Dave Calarco and Parker Harrington and we embark on the wonderful journey that is reviewing the two Deer Creek and two Alpine Valley shows from summer 2012. These two classic Phish venues almost never disappoint and this year was no different. With the shows falling at just past the halfway point of tour, the boys were in full swing and dealt us beautifully crafted setlists, precise improvisation and some more stage antics. We could have thrown a dart at the setlists and hit a great clip each time but as usual cut down to what we felt were the ten best.

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

Episode 50: OH>PA>OH (2012)

Listen to Episode 50

You guys,

I’m gonna keep this one short. This episode covers the Riverbend > Starlake > Blossum run from Summer Tour 2012. Joining me are Tanya and past guest, friend of the show Josh Korin. This was a great three days and as expected it took us a while to cover everything. Great setlists, antics, whale calls, type 17, plinko, and even a bustout litter these six sets. Josh was lucky enough to hit all three, while Tanya and I were confined to the land of ghetto couch tour and a failing Live Phish app. We hold no grudges for missing out on a great run and enjoyed every minute of of our ten clips for the evening. Check back soon in the comments for the track listing.

Thanks for listening and we will see you guys after Alpine.

-Steve

PS: We need Lushington signs at Jones Beach.

Episode 49: nTelos (2012)

Listen to Episode 49

This week on the podcast I am joined by Drew and Stephen T. from TWoL. Both were in attendance at the 2 nTelos shows, and I did #couchtour proper. We love this venue, and we love the antics and jams that Phish threw down over this 2 day, midweek run after Bader Field. I had wanted to keep this on the shorter side, but with 6 clips and an outro, will clocked in at just over an hour. As will happen from time to time, we go beyond the show reviews and drop some info and lulz that you don’t want to miss out on.

We will be back in just a few days with our review of Cincinnati > Burgettstown > Cuyahoga. Thanks for listening.

- Steve

Thanks for listening,

Steve

PS: Apologies for Drew’s audio which has issues at time. He was on an AT&T iPad in the middle of the woods.

Episode 48: Bader Field (2012)

Listen to Episode 48

This week on the show, Scotty, Tao Pauly and I review the 3 night “festival” run from Atlantic City, NJ a few days ago. We all were in attendance and couldn’t have been happier with the grounds, crowd and all around quality playing. Those in attendance were treated to some type 2 jams, stage banter and segues a plenty, adding up to a well rounded 6 sets. We had lots to choose from and present you with 10 clips, the exact details of which will be released at a later date. In the meantime, load us up onto your music device and take a trip with us to Bader Field.

Thanks for listening,

Episode 45: The Story of the Ghost

Listen to Episode 45

This week on the podcast, I am joined by Dave Calarco and Stephen Tuzeneu to discuss the evolution … er … Story of the Ghost. Similar to the Mike’s episode, we take you on a journey from the birth of Ghost, track how it evolved in 1.0, and touch on the unfortunate treatment it has seen (mostly) in 3.0. I wish I could joke about only having a few clips, but that would be ridiculous as we have MORE CLIPS THAN ANY EPISODE BEFORE.  Have no fear, we guarantee you will enjoy and leave with a nugget of knowledge about this fan favorite.

I feel like I’ve never told you, thanks for listening.

Episode 36: Europe 98

Listen to Episode 36

This week on the program, I am joined by Adam Scheinberg and Jeremy Welsh of phish.net, and we talk about the Europe Tour from Summer 98. Adam was in attendance at almost every show this tour, while Jeremy hit 2 of arguably the best. I, on the other hand, probably didn’t even realize Phish had left the country at the time. Like in 97, this tour saw phish play small clubs, debut new songs, and treat the fans to a variety of antics, some intentional, some probably not. As usual, we found tasty clips to highlight some of the better and perhaps overlooked moments of these 10 shows. Sit back, relax, and prepare to be whisked away to an intimate time in Phishtory.

Thanks for listening, we’ll catch everyone next week.

Episode 31: Tahoe and Outside Lands

Listen to Episode 31

Always something new on type II, this week we find just myself hosting with 2 guests from Phish.net, Brian Feller and Charlie Dirksen. Both were in attendance at Tahoe, and Charlie made the trip to Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands. I was on official couchtour for Tahoe, and then the ole “guy with iPhone who eats food and shows you his friends” couchtour for OL. Recognizing that we are late to the game with our review, and that most people understand nothing “epic” went down, we had to choose our clips carefully. 9 made the final cut, which is a mix of short solo’s, some questionable vocals, and straight type II hose. Beyond the clips and analysis, Brian and Charlie both shared some thoughts on the venues and what kind of jams and songs they love and hate.

We hope you enjoy this weeks installment of type II, we will be back next week with more guest hosts and our review of the highly regarded UIC shows. Thanks for listening, and remember:

“Songs were played, and then the next songs were played.” (BF)
