Episode 80: Glen Falls > Hartford (2013)

Listen to Episode 80

This week on the program, Adam Scheinberg (past guest and prominent .netter) has been kind enough to host. He is joined by past guest of the program, Parker Harrington, and new guest, Will Rubenstein. The panel has the pleasurable task of reviewing Glens Falls, both Worcester shows, and Hartford. Unfortunately, we don’t enough time to play all the clips we want, but we found the ten best which should not surprise you. So just press play and get to the good stuff already.

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

PS: Here is Parker’s video of the drummer switch from Worcester 1

Episode 76: Tahoe (2013)

Listen to Episode76

This week on the program I am joined by three guests, .netter Brian Feller, and “Rory” and Ben (aka Guy Forget) from Online Phish Tour. On this episode we tackle just two shows, our easiest “load” of the summer. It is nearly impossible to give a proper introduction to the epic Tweezer jam from night two which is easily the highlight of (insert some length of time that you choose). But don’t let the Tweezer overshadow the rest of this stop on tour. In fact, we found quite a few other great clips to showcase.

Stay tuned for our final show of the summer (before Dick’s) when I host Chris Glushko and some TBD guests in wrapping up summer tour with our review of the Bill Graham and Hollywood Bowl shows.

Thanks for listening,

- Steve

Episode 75: Toronto > The Gorge (2013)

Listen to Episode 75

On this episode of Type II Cast we review Toronto > The Gorge which was one hell of a run, in my humble opinion. It is my pleasure to be joined by panelist Scotty B and new guest to the show, Jefferson Waful. You guys may know Jeff from “Vine,” or possibly from doing lights for Umphrey’s McGee, but either way, his love and knowledge of the Phish goes deep. Together Scott and Jeff weave a trifecta of musical analysis, archival insight, and funny anecdotes to paint the picture of these three shows. Supplement that with the bucket full of clips we had to chose from and you are in for one hell of a ride.

Did we miss something? Do you know where the Wilson shirt came from? Is Possum a joke? Does length matter? If you know the answer to any of these questions leave us a note below. We will be back next week with recaps of Tahoe and San Francisco.

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

Episode 72: Bangor & SPAC (2013)

Listen to Episode 72

Hey everyone! Type II Cast is back and in full swing with Summer Tour 2013. To kick off the new season, we have veteran guests of the show Charles Dirksen and Dave Calarco. The three of us review Bangor through SPAC 3 and, as should be no surprise, we were pleasantly content with the first four shows of tour. The new sound, new lights, and new stage set-up really have made a difference and infused some phresh air into the band’s 30th year. OF COURSE, we brought you the best clips to highlight our commentary, as only Type II Cast can do. So sit back, relax, and grab a smoke as we take you back on tour with us through the first four shows of 2013.

Thanks for listening,

- Steve

From The Hose 3: Deep Sea Edition

Listen to “From The Hose 3: Deep Sea Edition”

Summer tour is just two days away, and I thought it would be fun to drop another mix tape on Type II nation. Yes, during the last episode I said we were on hiatus until tour starts. And even though this isn’t a “regular” episode, it still takes some sweat and tears to make it all happen. But guess what? I’m freaking excited for tour to start. So here we are. Queue this baby up on your travels this summer and get ready for some face meltage. Can you figure out the “theme” and/or the track list of this FTH? Leave a comment below.

Be sure to keep Type II locked, as we will be bringing you reviews of every show at some point (probably relatively untimely versus the blogs, but that’s how the podcast cookie crumbles).

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

PS: Be sure to check out volume 1 and volume 2 if you haven’t already.

Episode 66: Nerdgasm, Part 2

Listen to Episode 66

The Ultimate Phish ‘Nerdgasm’ Part 2: Rounds 1 & 2

Hello and welcome back for Part 2 of the Ultimate Nerdgasm, our take on a “March Madness” style tournament. What separates this from similar brackets are the six rules developed by panelist Chris Glushko and guest .netter Steve Paolini. These rules guided the selection of the 64 jams that we discussed on this episode. Before listening, you absolutely need to listen to the last episode and print out this bracket in order to follow along at home. Over the course of this episode, we voted from the original 64 jams down to the Sweet Sixteen and played clips (each exactly three minutes) for some of the closest matches. Each selection should be credited to the collective consciousness of Chris and Steve. Their Phish nerdiness is truly remarkable. Of course, that left me as the deciding vote on a few occasions, a task that was quite challenging at times. Fortunately, it’s hard to go wrong at the end of the day since all of these selections will fill your ears with hosey goodness.

How would you have voted on these 64 Jams? “Who” do you want to see make it the Final Four? Let us know below, and stay tuned for the final installment of The Ultimate Phish “Nerdgasm” next week.

Episode 65: Nerdgasm, Part 1

Listen to Episode 65

The Ultimate Phish ‘Nerdgasm’ Part 1: The Selection Show

If you’re reading this, you probably consider yourself somewhat of a Phish nerd—someone who gains an unhealthy amount of pleasure in discussing best songs, shows, sets, venues, cities, lyrics, compositions, recordings, jams, lights, and more. With that said, we decided to hold the ultimate Phish nerdgasm, a 64-team March Madness style tournament to determine the best Phish jam of all time. Now, this is nothing new to the Phish blogosphere. We’ve all seen Phish March Madness brackets before, and I’m sure we’ll see them again. But we wanted to make ours just a little different. We did so by taking ourselves way too seriously. And I knew that if there was one person to take on this project with, it was fellow Phish.netter, Mockingbird Foundation volunteer, and list-maker extraordinaire, Steve Paolini.

Episode 64: Sound Check

Listen to Episode 64

Check Check … 1 … 2. 1 … 2.

This week on the podcast we talked about one event that goes down before every show, even though most of us will never hear it: the sound check. And while the main reason for a sound check is technical necessity, the band has on many occasions used this time to do everything from joke around with each other to straight up melt faces. Of course, covering thirty years of sound checks is nearly impossible, even considering that many never reach the public’s ears. But from what is available, Josh, Brian Feller, and I hit you with some of our favorites and discussed the state of sound checks past, present, and future. Did we miss one of your favorites? Let us know in the comments section below.

Thanks for listening. We will be back in two weeks with “March Madness.”

Episode 63: 2013 Wish List

Listen to Episode 63

For this week’s show I wanted to talk about 2013, the 30th anniversary of Phish. Many of us are expecting a huge touring calendar with holiday runs and festivals as far as the eye can see.  And while anyone’s guess is as good as the next as to what will actually take place, I thought it would be fun to kill some time day dreaming about what we would like to see. Joining me on this ride are past guest / HT contributor Parker Harrington and first time Type II’er Adam Icculus. We touch on just about every aspect of what could be in 2013, including venues, types of jams, bust-outs, covers, and even the webcasts. As usual, we weave in some choice clips throughout the episode that will leave you salivating for more.

What would you like to see in 2013? Leave us a comment below or on our Facebook page.

Thanks for listening,

Steve

Episode 55: Kansas City > Pelham > Atlanta (2012)

Listen to Episode 55

Leg 2 of summer tour continues and so does the fresh content on type 2 cast. Continuing the trend from last episode, the panel is another “+1,” consisting of regular guest Josh Korin and myself. To set the stage, neither of us were there, and that’s OK. We did catch the webcast from Pelham and hope to see this trend continue as we both had a blast. We picked nine of the best clips from these three shows but changed up the formula for the outro. This episode was streamed live and the chat room picked the last clip. We’ve been trying new things on type 2 and we will continue to mix it up for the next two episodes. Don’t miss out!

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

Episode 51: Deer Creek > Alpine Valley (2012)

Listen to Episode 51

This week on the program I am joined by Dave Calarco and Parker Harrington and we embark on the wonderful journey that is reviewing the two Deer Creek and two Alpine Valley shows from summer 2012. These two classic Phish venues almost never disappoint and this year was no different. With the shows falling at just past the halfway point of tour, the boys were in full swing and dealt us beautifully crafted setlists, precise improvisation and some more stage antics. We could have thrown a dart at the setlists and hit a great clip each time but as usual cut down to what we felt were the ten best.

Thanks for listening,

-Steve

Episode 37: Hampton/Winston-Salem ‘97

Listen to Episode 37

This week on the podcast join Scott, Eric and myself as we review the highly anticipated release of Phish’s Hampton Winston/Salem ’97 7-CD Box Set. Everyone and their brother has probably already listened to this. A few times. Every blogger has already written a review. Polls are up. Debates are occurring. But as any seasoned listener of the program should expect, we bring you a little bit of “all of the above”, with some choice clips thrown into the mix. What were the cast’s favorite moments? Never any spoilers here, hit play or go download in iTunes. (hint hint)

Thanks for listening,

Episode 32: UIC

Listen to Episode 32

This episode finds myself joined by type II cast regular, Eric Wyman, and guest host, Adam B. from Online Phish Tour. Both were in attendance and assert that a good time was had by all at the last 3 shows of Leg 2. With plenty of clips to choose from this week, a few were left on the studio floor. It should be no surprise to anyone listening that this run is a contender for one of the best in 2011, and perhaps 3.0. As usual, we are here to give our analysis and insight,  wrapped in colorful commentary, baked in a pastry. Grab a glass Merlot, block off the next hour, and enjoy.

Episode 20: The Clifford Ball

Listen to Episode 20

This week our topic is the first in a series of festival reviews. We gave everyone the choice of which festival to cover first, and The Clifford Ball came in at number 1, proving that chronological order is the way to go. Fortunately, Scotty, Drew and Tanya were all at the Ball, and can offer first hand reviews and insight. Like always, we assembled some choice clips and even opted to sneak an extra one in during the intro. And since this is the “Nerd Music Phish Cast” (as I heard it referred to last week), the blog post can be pretty simple. Listen in, and enjoy some pictures and technical info after the page break.

Thanks for listening,

Steve
